Having a set conveyor speed, as part of a set of requirements, is not something that customers tend to consider too much. To this end, here at Central Conveyors Ltd, it is something that we will discuss with our customers so that they understand the importance of understanding conveyor belt system speed and the implications that it has.
If a conveyor system is going at the wrong speed, then optimization of productivity is going to be at risk. It would help if you got the correct balance when speed is concerned, that is a balance between a practical traveling speed and efficiency. For example, it would be folly to have a delicate product speeding along a belt, as this would risk damage to the product and system.
With this being said what is the formula, the equation that can be used to understand how to work out the speed of your belt?
There are a few metrics that you need to understand.
Firstly what is the circumference of the rollers in the conveyor?
Secondly, what are the revolutions per minute?
Multiply these two figures together to get the answer.
Speed = roller circumference x motor RPM (revolutions per minute)
What is the circumference of the rollers in the conveyor? You can measure the diameter of the rollers around which the conveyor belt is wrapped and then multiply the diameter of the roller by pi, 3.14159. This calculation will tell you the circumference of the rollers.
What are the revolutions per minute? Measure the revolutions per minute of the rollers by counting how many times the roller makes full rotations in one minute.
Multiply the RPM by the circumference of the roller. This calculation provides the distance moved by a point on the conveyor belt in one minute.
This calculation can become slightly more complex if other factors in the system come into play, but they are not dealt with here. Suffice to say when working with CCL on a bespoke conveyor system this whole area is something we will raise with, and discuss with you.
